The Denver Broncos have suspended Brandon Marshall for the rest of the preseason for insubordination.

Coach Josh McDaniels met with Marshall Friday morning and informed him he was being suspended for conduct detrimental to the team after exhibiting open acts of insubordination Wednesday on the practice field.

McDaniels informed the team in a full-squad meeting of the decision Friday, at the end of a meeting in which they discussed the upcoming game against Bears.

The Broncos already have had discussions with the league regarding Marshall’s suspension. They are expected to reassess the situation when the preseason ends Sept. 6.

Brandon Marshall is back in the mix offensively at practice, but it remains unclear whether the Broncos’ disgruntled wide receiver will make his preseason debut Sunday against the Chicago Bears.


Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said Marshall was fully involved in Tuesday’s practice, the team’s first since Saturday’s 27-13 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The practice, which was closed to the media, was cut short about 45 minutes because of bad weather.

“He did everything that we were doing there, he did our drills,” McDaniels said of Marshall. “We didn’t get to finish practice obviously, but it was a nice crisp practice today.”

“For almost a year and a half now I’ve been swearing to my teammates and the community that I’m not that guy that they were portraying me to be,” Marshall said about the trial and the case made against him. “Finally, to stand in front of a jury where they finally see both sides and for it to be a fair stage, the truth finally came out.”

“There are going to be those who still believe otherwise, but the truth came out on Friday,” Marshall said.

Safety Brian Dawkins also returned to practice with his right hand heavily wrapped over a cast and was wearing an orange protective jersey. Dawkins had been out since Aug. 3 with a broken right hand.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said Marshall’s absence was simply a “precautionary measure” after he was sore following the team’s first workout for rookies and rehabbers the day before. Marshall had offseason hip surgery, but McDaniels wouldn’t elaborate whether that’s what bothered the Pro Bowl receiver.

Most veterans are expected July 31; injured players (including Marshall, who is recovering from hip surgery) and rookies will report July 27. Marshall told the cable network’s NFL Total Access show, “As of right now, I’m still under contract. I have a wedding to prepare for, so I’m definitely going to show up. I’m not going to let them take no money.”

The Denver Broncos have sent a letter to their disgruntled wide receiver, requesting Marshall’s presence at training camp on July 27 when rookies are to report. Marshall, who is rehabilitating from hip surgery, skipped mandatory minicamp workouts in June. Marshall was injured and could not have competed in the workouts, so it was ludicrous for him not to show up for the mandatory camps.
