Jimmer Fredette and BYU survived a thrilling reminder that March Madness is back.
Fredette scored 37 points, including two 3-pointers in double overtime, to seal the Cougars’ 99-92 win over 10th-seeded Florida on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Fredette, the nation’s 12th-leading scorer, made a 3 from the top of the key to put seventh-seeded BYU (30-5) ahead 90-83 with 2:42 left, then added another deep shot with just over a minute remaining to put the game away.
Michael Loyd Jr. added a career-high 26 points, pushing BYU to a lead it would hold until a late second-half rally by Florida. Loyd scored all the Cougars’ points in the first overtime.
Kenny Boynton scored 27 points for Florida (21-13), helping to rally the Gators from a 13-point second-half deficit in their first NCAA tournament game since back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.

The way the University of Utah football team is being treated this week, you’d think the Utes were in a huge slump rather than a team that has won 22 of its las 23 games. The 16th-ranked Utes are a 17 1/2 point underdog at #4 TCU this Saturday in Fort Worth. But while the Horned Frogs are the favorite to win the Mountain West Conference and make a BCS bowl game for the first time, Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham isn’t ready to concede the conference title just yet.
“We’re the defending champ,” said Whittingham. “The championship trophy is in this building, and somebody’s got to take that away from us. That’s the first thing we tell our guys is TCU is a very good football team and we respect them. But the bottom line is we’ve played some good football this year as well.”
The Utes have also had a lot of success against the Horned Frogs. Utah has won three straight games over TCU, including last year’s 13-10 thriller at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Overall, the Utes are 5-1 against TCU, with their only loss coming in overtime back in 2005, 23-20.

Brigham Young senior quarterback Max Hall was careful not to criticize UNLV’s defense after watching videotape of the Rebels’ 63-28 loss at UNR last weekend.
He pointed out the football game got away late and wasn’t indicative of what he expects to face when the No. 18 Cougars play UNLV at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.
But …
“… but (UNR) did expose some things defensively that (the Rebels) either had mistakes on or don’t do well,” Hall said. “But one thing I’ve noticed is that every single team we’ve played, other than Oklahoma, has played it differently than what we thought.
“You have to kind of prepare for everything, but there are a few things I think we’re going to take advantage of and that we’ll want in the game plan.”
This looks like a dream matchup for Hall, who leads the Mountain West Conference in average yards passing per game, at 280.6. The Rebels, who largely play zone, have allowed 7.9 yards per attempt, second worst in the MWC.

With anticipation growing for the coming football season, CSU has added Dillon Holliam, Travis Ford and Cam Loughery to its roster, Head Coach Steve Fairchild announced Thursday.
Holliam, a 6-foot-1, 189-pound true freshman from Hazelwood West High School in suburban St. Louis, Mo., was a captain and his team’s MVP as both a junior and senior. A safety, he also was a star track athlete for his high school, and was a Missouri state qualifier in the 200 meters.
