There have been many suprisingly good starts by pitchers in 2010 that haven’t had good seasons the past few years. Is it a fluke, or are these pitchers for real this season? 1. Ubaldo Jiminez: Jiminez has been by far the biggest suprise starting pitcher of 2010. With a record of 10-1 and a 0.78 ERA Jiminez has been the best pitcher in all of baseball so far this season. I think this guy is for real, he has always had a ton of strikeouts and a career ERA of 3.39. Jiminez’s win percentage has remained around .500 mostly because his team did not score a lot of runs for him in the past. I know it’s early in the season but if Jiminez doesn’t win the Cy Young Award it would be shocking. If the Rockies trade for another strong starter to help Jiminez out their team can be dangerous. The Rockies should build around Jiminez, if they don’t he may want out after the season is over.

Maybe a couple of years ago, Ubaldo Jimenez's emotions would have gotten the best of him. But not now. Not after his evolution into the most dominant pitcher in baseball. Throw your fastball for strikes.' And that's what I did."

Ubaldo Jimenez is the real deal, and his stats prove it.

Congratulations, Rockies fan. You finally have an ace. Not since the late Darryl Kile has the Rockies had a legitimate #1 starting pitcher. That was supposed to be Mike Hampton, but clearly, that did not work out. Part of it is the fact that pitching at Coors Field is a chore. But even if it is a chore, it can be done. Ubaldo Jimenez looks to be the real deal. After looking impressive last year, Jimenez started off this season with a no-hitter. A no-hitter is a great feat, but it does not prove anything. Bud Smith once got a no hitter. Who? That’s what I thought.

But at 7-1 with a 1.12 ERA, Jimenez looks like the ace that Rockies fans have desired for years. His ERA is even just 1.80 ERA at home. And at this point, anything below a 3.00 ERA at Coors Field would be considered amazing. While Mike Hampton was supposed to have this success, at least it looks like it’s coming almost ten years later.

Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy juggled his lineup Sunday with Phillies left-hander J.A. Happ on the mound instead of Pedro Martinez.

Tracy benched All-Star right fielder Brad Hawpe, who has slumped over the second half of the season, and replaced him with Ryan Spilborghs for Game 3, which was bumped back a night because of a snowstorm.

Tracy also moved catcher Yorvit Torrealba up two spots to fifth in the order, hoping to put his hottest bat behind Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki, who have yet to get into an offensive groove in this best-of-five series.

Torrealba, a career .255 hitter, said he had never batted fifth in the order.

Todd Helton is the Rockies. For more than a decade, he has achieved a level of consistency and durability no other Colorado player has ever equaled.
As the Rockies open their National League division series today against the Phillies, Helton will be at first base and in the third spot in the lineup.

If shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is the franchise, Helton is the fixture.

"We all look to Todd," outfielder Brad Hawpe said.

In aging, Helton has evolved, as a player and as a leader. At 36, he's not the breathless slugger who can change a game with one swing. Helton's value has changed with him. Where he benefits the Rockies most is not in statistics but rather in the dugout and in the clubhouse.

The Rockies lost so many games the first two months that they lost their manager. They won so many games over the final four months that they nearly won the National League West. All that matters now is what's up next. The playoff picture is in focus. The Phillies are the defending World Series champions, a distinction that came a year too late for their tastes. The Rockies broomed Philadelphia in the 2007 playoffs, an embarrassment that Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins conceded provided motivation last season.

This time around, the Phillies are favored again, largely because of their starting rotation, led by lefties Cliff Lee and World Series MVP Cole Hamels. One, probably Lee, will start Wednesday, followed by the other.

The Rockies are a pedestrian 27-26 when facing a left-handed starter this season and 8-16 on the road. Lee and J.A. Happ, a potential Saturday starter, defeated the Rockies at Citizens Bank Park in August.

Perhaps forgotten in the madness of the Rockies' latest chapter of LoDo magic was the performance of starter Jason Marquis. Going into Tuesday night's game against the Brewers, he was lost. But he just might have found himself with six resourceful innings of pitching.

"I would be lying if I said I didn't have any doubts," Marquis said about his state of mind entering Tuesday's game. "Any human being who goes through struggles will have doubts. Hopefully you don't bring them out to the mound."

But Marquis appeared to have been doing just that of late. In each of his three previous starts, he went out hunting for his career-high 16th victory. But each time he got blown out, going 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA.
